Cautious, law-abiding and reluctant to set a bad example for children, German pedestrians tend to avoid jaywalking and almost always wait for the light to turn before crossing at intersections. Break either of these rules and you risk a fine and a public shaming for being a potential infanticide.
Bicyclists, on the other hand, frequently flout the law with impunity, contesting with pedestrians for control of the city’s sidewalks.
Apart from smokers and late-night drinkers, people here usually don’t litter.
It’s customary (and expected) to help women lift their baby carriages on and off the tram.
