In Germany there are basically just two emergency telephone codes. On the one hand “110” to call the police and on the other hand “112” for emergency calls/accident notifications and for calling the fire brigade/department.
Under “112” one can get through EMS at any time. Both numbers can be called free of charge no matter whether one uses a mobile, the fixed network or a public telephone box. At the public telephone box one needs neither a phone card nor coins.
For emergency calls/accident notifications the German Red Cross (DRK) advises us answer briefly and precisely the following five W’s:
- Where is the emergency/accident?
- What happened?
- What is the number of hurt/affected people?
- What kind of injuries are evident on the people concerned?
- Wait for queries of the rescue centre!
Usually emergency calls are answered in German. But normally there should be at least one person who speaks English, too. The emergency telephone code “112”, by the way, is being introduced all countries of the European Union.
