Gas, water or electricity is something that one takes for granted, but very necessary for life and comfort. The Stadtwerke Düsseldorf started operation as the city-owned in 1866. By the years activities were broadened from gas supply to water and electricity supply as well as waste disposal. The privatization of the company began in the late 1980s. Nowadays the Stadtwerke Düsseldorf are privately owned by three thirds and competes in the open market.

As Dusseldorf’s primary domestic energy supplier, it provides gas and electricity for private and business customers. Stadtwerke Düsseldorf is also responsible for the local water supply; it is committed to tackling the issues of climate change and sustainability, and to minimising the impact that the operations have on the environment. Already in 1998 the German MOT (TÜV) Rhineland certified this environmental way of working.

The use and development of innovative energy-related technologies is the company´s forte;
The company manages and operates plant oil and biological gas-fired power stations .

More than 2,500 employees and a production of about 13,4 million kWh make the Stadtwerke Düsseldorf an important economic factor in the region. The headquarters are located on Höherweg in Flingern; part of the headquarters complex is the so called Turbinenhalle, the former power generation building that has been restored complete with old turbine. The Cuban-born artist Jorge Pardo redesigned the interior and created a lively display of colour under the motto of industrialization. The space can be rented for private functions for up to 650 persons.
