Basketball.
While basketball shoes can be considered as retro, the game itself has become more and more popular. Since its foundation the “Deutscher Basketball-Bund”, the German Basketball Federation has multiplied the number of its members so that today there are almost 200 000 registered members.
No German basketball player is better known than Dirk Nowitzki. He was the first basketball player to come into the NBA directly from Europe back in the 90’s and is still one of the top scorers. Nowitzki is very involved in supporting education, health and wellbeing for children around the world and is probably the main role model for German basketball players.
The physical education teacher James Naismith invented basketball when students in Springfield, Massachusetts asked for an alternative sport to gymnastics. In the twentieth century the so called “Korbball” was imported to Germany. The literal-translation was abandoned in 1921 and since then “Basketball” has become another American import.
