In 1839 the “Neusser Heimat-und Geschichtsverein”, or the homeland and history society, was founded and was the first attempt to preserve the history of Neuss, which was one of the first Roman fortification and settlement in Germanic territory.
Pauline Sels financed the first museum in Neuss, built in the likeness of an antique temple. She also donated the private art collection of her husband Clemens Sels to the museum. In 1950 on its reopening, the museum was named after him. Due to the damage caused by the Second World War the pieces of art were kept in the “Obertor”, a former town gate, which still houses the department of medieval art, folk art and toys.
An archaeological collection, naïve art, documents on Neuss’ history, art and applied arts of the 12th – 18th Century and art of the 19th – 21st Century are part of the museum as well. These departments are in the new building, which was connected with the town gate in 1975.
