K20 will be closed temporarily as of 28 April 2008. The building on Grabbeplatz will undergo farreaching improvements and renovations, and a new museum wing will be erected. The reopening of the K20 is scheduled for autumn 2009.
The collection 20th century art was started in 1960 when 88 works by Paul Klee were acquired. They form the basic core of the Foundation Collection North Rhine-Westphalia, Stiftung Sammlung Nordrhehin-Westfalen.
Due to lack of space, the museum moved in 1986 from Schloß Jägerhof to the newly designed building on Grabbeplatz. Following the extension of the collection and the creation of a second location showing art of the late 20th and 21st century, the existing collection was renamed K20.
K20 places it's main focus on art from the classical modern age, the Fauvismus, the Pittura Metafiscia and expressionism up to Dadaism. Famous representatives of these eras such as Mark Rothko, Kirkeby or Daniel Buren have been shown here.
Services on offer include a library and several group and single guides. The restaurant-café-bar Op de Eck is highly recommended to relax in whilst enjoying breakfast or dinner from their eclectic menu.
