Stand outside the Kunsthalle, art hall,  and look at a giant grey block of concrete and be prepared to be surprised. The concrete cube was built in 1967 according to a concept of the architect Konrad Beckmann and, since a recent comprehensive renovation it presents itself to visitors in a new light. The interior view of the Kunsthalle is as simple as the exterior and the basic room layout and generously formed rooms offer a fantastic framework to let art work on the beholder.

And the concept of the Kunsthalle is also unique. From the beginning, both institutions, the Kunsthalle and the Arts Club of the Rhineland and Westphalia, Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen are beneath the same roof. Together they form a rather long public-private-partnership.

With the reopening in 2002, the programme was also presented anew. The Kunsthalle shows single artists and also groups in changing exhibitions. It owns no own collection. The thematic priority is the presentation of streams of international art and of artists from Dusseldorf. The Kunsthalle is known for exhibits of the most important and most significant artists of the retrospective, avant-garde and present. Furthermore, its purpose is providing information on each stream of art and to facilitate the meaning of styles and expressions.

The bar Salon des Amateurs integrated into the Kunsthalle is also a venue for concerts, talks and screenings as well as for having a coffee.
