This Workshop for Dance, tanzhaus nrw. die werkstatt e.V. is a nonprofit association designed to support contemporary dancing. Several stages and educational studios are at the heart of cultural exchange in general, exchange with local dance companies and with children and youngsters. With a wide offering of contemporary dance performances, various topical festivals and workshops as part of continuous education, the tanzhaus is a highly unique institution in Dusseldorf.
The Tanzhaus NRW was founded in 1973 from a small group of artists including Robert Solomon and Chris Parker. Closed in 1977 due to financial and organizational difficulties, it reopened in 1978 as a nonprofit workshop for dance, theatre, painting, crafting and designing, Werkstatt für Tanz, Theater, Malen, Werken und Gestalten and has gone from strength to strength.
The purpose of this institution is the support of creativity and the creative personality of amateurs as well as meeting with artists and other cultures. 1979 it started to organise workshop festivals to strengthen the connection between laymen and artists. Beginning of the 80s it moved to the present location and started offering more than a hundred courses per week and more than 200 workshops each year. In addition, to support theatre for youngsters began - among other things the precursor of the today's akki. The 90s signified the renovation of the oldest local tram depot and the opening of the new Tanzhaus NRW in reorganized rooms and the receipt of several awards. The early years of the 21st century are distinguished by several activities within the national and international dance community as well as the support of the dance for children and youngsters. A great highlight was the four day celebration for its 30 year jubilee. A must for all lovers of dance.
