Relish in a piece of Elizabethan England right here in Germany at the wonderful Shakespeare Festival in Neuss, staged in their very own Globe Theatre.

This year’s programme is compiled of fascinating productions from several nations. Highlights include a performance of Romeo and Juliet in a thoroughly hip version as the lovers tragic tale is told from the travelling scene of a beaten up VW camper van.

Particularly appropriate this year as Romeo and Juliet is part of the Abitur curriculum.

London’s Globe Theatre Company took to the road last year for the first time in four hundred years to show the world’s most famous love story in a very contemporary way. With a company of just eight players this huge hit played in castles and parks across the UK and now.for 2008 the Neuss Globe Theatre is delighted to be hosting this legendary theatre company for the first time in Germany with this upbeat production.

Another absolute gem is ‘The Winter’s Tale’ staged by the Ryutopia Noh-Theatre Shakespeare Company from Niigata, Japan.

Told in the atmospheric setting of the minimalist Noh Theatre this theatrical concept does not rely on props and stage sets but concentrates more on lighting and an almost trance-like seduction to entice you into the production. For an insight into how this piece came about see the interview with the director Yoshihiro Kurita.

Other performances are on offer in  English as well as pieces in French and German. The acclaimed Aquila Theatre Company from New York are also playing.

The icing on the cake has to be the small, delightful picnic baskets packed with delicious goodies that you will be able to purchase at the festival so that you and your friends can enjoy that most English of traditions on the grounds of the Neusser Racecourse, the home of the Globe. Bring a blanket and order the Pimms!

The Shakespeare Festival at the Neuss Globe is from 24th July to 23rd August 2008
