Rhine County Neuss has more green to it than one may think. Starting at the center, a green promenade runs through the city right next to the Erftmühlengraben. Follow the narrow path and find yourself in a rose garden; the “Rosengarten”, beside its comfy appeal as a place for recreation, is also the location of the annual Open-Air Classics Nights.
The “Alte Stadtgarten” and its newer version, the “Neuer Stadtgarten”, are popular places to families strolling along the walking paths around the pond or channel, perhaps picnicking on one of the meadows. By the way, if you want to see real locomotives this is where you want to go - All trails lead to a collection of old locomotives.
A small but precious Botanic Garden right between the Körnerstrasse and the Berheimer Strasse invites the visitor not only to enjoy a variety of exotic plants but also to watch birds in a bird house.
Especially the warm months allure children and their parents to visit the so-called “Jröne Meerke”; the park in the North of Neuss offers among other things a paddling pool. Why not also rent a place at the barbecue area? In the opposite direction the “Südpark” equates (levels) with a lake and a playground.
Further there is the “Selikumer Park” with his “Arboretum”, an anthology of trees as live examples of different regions and eras. Apart from being a “tree museum” the “Selikumer Park” is also home to ponies, deer, pigs, chickens and many other animals especially children will enjoy seeing.
Yet an entirely different experience of nature can be made leaving the human-made trails behind, exploring the nature reserve “Ölgangsinsel” located between Dusseldorf Heerdt and the Harbour of Neuss. This uninhabited - and frequently flooded - island is home to untouched nature, plants and mussels.
